Breaks & Breakbeat in Phoenix: Our Home Sound
By Brook B, resident DJ & crew lead, Fraktured Phoenix
Breakbeat in Phoenix centers on Fraktured Phoenix, the Valley crew billed as Home of the Broken Beat, which books breaks artists from across the US and abroad, from headliners like Stanton Warriors, The Freestylers and Simply Jeff to its own local residents.
Every crew has a center of gravity. Ours is the broken beat: syncopated, chopped-up drum patterns with heavy bass underneath, the sound that funk breakbeats grew into once samplers and warehouse walls got involved. Fraktured is Home of the Broken Beat (it's on the logo), and Phoenix is one of the few American cities where breaks never stopped being dance floor music.
What counts as breaks
Breakbeat runs roughly 125-140 BPM. Instead of house's steady four-on-the-floor kick, the drums stutter, swing and snap: descended from the funk breaks hip-hop was built on, run through electro, Miami bass and UK rave. It's funky, dirty and made for dancing, and it sits close enough to house, electro and UKG that a good breaks set can slide between all of them without the floor noticing the seams. The full family tree is in our genre guide.

Why Phoenix, of all places
Breaks took root in the Southwest through the 90s and 2000s rave circuit and never let go: desert parties favored music with groove and space in it, and the Arizona-Florida-California breaks pipeline kept fresh vinyl moving through. Fraktured's own history runs through that lineage. The national crew, Fraktured Nation, started in Seattle in 2016; the Phoenix chapter picked up the flag in 2017 and has been booking breaks headliners (Stanton Warriors, The Freestylers, Simply Jeff, Keith MacKenzie, Huda Hudia, Curtis B) alongside the local family ever since. Read the whole story on our about page.
The home team
Almost every Fraktured resident plays breaks; it is the crew's shared language. Start with Brook B, Zaptek, Excell, StrangeEarth, E.C.O. Freq, SK*Boog and FLEX, then work through the whole resident roster. Need that sound at your event? Book our DJs.
